Anilingus Safety

Anilingus, colloquially termed “rimming,” has become a pretty trendy sex act over recent years.  While odds are that what you enjoy or don’t isn’t going to be influenced by rising and falling trends, this has had the effect of making anilingus a more public topic and inviting conversation about what used to be considered an unclean act by a lot of people.  Cunnilingus and fellatio used to have the exact same reputation, even to the point of being illegal in some states.  If the idea of licking your partner’s anus or penetrating it with your tongue is new to you (or having your partner do it for you), one of the first questions you might have is, “Is anilingus safe?  Is it clean?”

Anilingus safety

Anilingus carries a couple of possible health risks if proper cleanliness isn’t observed.  As with any other sex act, it’s possible to catch an STD when rimming.  So if you don’t know your partner well or you don’t practice fidelity, you’ll want to use some form of protection while performing anilingus, just as you would if you were doing any other sex act.  The other health risks which anilingus can pose relate to infections which can be passed through the digestive tract.  This risk is once again higher with a partner you don’t know well, since you may not be aware of any active infections that person has.  With a partner you know well, you’re far more likely to be aware of any potential health concerns since you’ll know if there’s an active infection.  Anilingus should be avoided completely during active infections, but if there aren’t any infections, most experts agree that it’s a pretty safe thing to do if proper hygiene is observed.

Barrier Options

Barrier options aren’t usually required in situations where risks are minimized, but when you’re with a partner you don’t know or know well or you don’t practice fidelity, you should probably be using some kind of barrier for extra safety.  There are a number of different options here.  Dental dams are highly recommended; another idea is to use plastic wrap or to modify a latex glove or condom.

Wash First

99.9% of men don't know how to give women an orgasm this strong… Find out how...

One of the most ideal locations to perform anilingus is in the shower, since in the shower it’s easy to get clean.  The area should be washed thoroughly using soap and water to disinfect the skin and rinse off any bacteria which might be lingering around the anal opening.  Washing the area surrounding the anus should feasibly make that area just as clean as any other skin on the body.  Remember that there’s nothing especially dirty about that area once it’s clean—it’s not like other parts of the body are cleaner if they’ve had contact with fecal matter either.

One of the main concerns which people have about cleanliness and anilingus is the cleanliness of the anal canal itself.  If your partner’s bowel movements are irregular (or yours are), anilingus might not be a great option, at least if there’s going to be penetration, since there could be a fair amount of fecal matter still in the colon.  In people with regular bowel movements, there usually isn’t that much fecal matter still in the canal after feces have been passed, but trace amounts can remain, and it only takes trace amounts of particulate to spread infection.  The partner who is performing can get infected from direct oral contact with fecal matter even if there isn’t an active infection making the receiving partner sick.

One way to clean out the canal is to use an enema.  It’s suggested that the enema be performed a couple of hours before anilingus is performed; but before you use one, you should also learn about how to administer an enema safely.  Note that not everyone can handle enemas either; some people are indifferent to them or even enjoy them, but others find them very unpleasant.  Enemas can’t be done that often, because they interfere with the digestive tract.  There is some disagreement as to whether enemas are helpful or harmful in people who have IBS or IBD or other problems with the digestive tract.  Using enemas improperly can cause problems with electrolyte imbalance or rupture tissue, which is why it’s important to read and follow all directions and use enemas in moderation.  Too many enemas within too short a time frame will increase the odds of problems occurring.  If you follow instructions however and don’t overdo it, it’s highly unlikely that any problems will occur, assuming you’re healthy.

How important is an enema?  It depends on how important safety is to you, and also on whether you’re going to be penetrating the anal canal with your tongue.  In situations where you don’t plan to penetrate, it may not be as essential.  If you’re going to penetrate, you should always use an enema to ensure that you aren’t going to be in direct contact with fecal matter.

After Anilingus

After performing anilingus, it’s a good idea to use mouthwash to rinse out your mouth.  Experts aren’t entirely sure how effective this is at removing any bacteria, but it’s a good precaution to take.  Hydrogen peroxide is another option to use as a mouthwash.  Should you brush your teeth?  We’ve seen it recommended, but we’ve also seen precautions urging against it, since brushing is an abrasive activity and may tear the gums, which could actually increase the chances of an infection entering the bloodstream if bacteria are present.  So stick with the mouthwash and brush your teeth later.

Anilingus is practiced very widely and is become a more conventional sex activity.  If it’s something you’re interested in doing, as long as you observe all the safety recommendations we’ve listed above, you should be relatively safe while doing it.  And as with any other sex act, your health risks will be reduced if you are well acquainted with your partner and aware of any infections she might have.
